The " festival of the humanities " is not just another festival, but the sign of a rallying of initiatives, practices and events.

A constellation in action.

On May 6, 2020, addressing the " secteur de la culture ", the President of the Republic declared that he wanted to launch_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-136_bad_cc5 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_a major program of public commissions (for) crafts, live performances, literature, plastic arts ». On the basis of this call and this open proposal, a collective immediately set to work, bringing together artists and cultural actors, but also community leaders and activists, or simple citizens, sharing the simple idea that " la culture " is everyone's business.

Within this collective, in the foreshadowing of future events, from mid-July, throughout France and even beyond, a charter has been enacted with the value of a manifesto._cc781905-5cde -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

CHARTER

Preamble

  • The Humanities Festival was born from a collective desire to reinvent a cultural policy, rooted in the territories.

  • This initiative brings together artists, cultural actors, associative activists, citizens, some of whom have been involved for a long time in artistic, cultural, ecological, social actions, etc.

  • Based on past and/or current experiences, a common reflection has begun, in the face of the health crisis linked to COVID-19 and its social, economic and cultural consequences, to identify proposals that can respond to the "  duty of reinvention ”.

  • The humanities festival asserts itself as a platform for practice, initiatives and events wishing to connect, unite, pool, in order to build collective intelligence.

We are what
we are not

  • The humanities festival is not a label, it is a rallying point.

  • The humanities festival does not belong to anyone in particular, it is a collective work.

  • The festival of the humanities does not depend on any institution, it never ceases to constitute itself.

  • The festival of humanities is not placed under any tutelage, it affirms an unimpeded right of invention.

  • Le festival des humanités  ne vise pas la « conquête de nouveaux publics »,  il échappe to the logic of filling.

  • The humanities festival intends to go beyond the notion of “ cultural democratization ”, and cultivate the democracy of the commons in action.

  • The festival of humanities is not above ground, it composes with the territories and their inhabitants wherever it creates its home in shared elaboration.

Commitments

  • Artists, poets and writers, intellectuals and researchers have their place within the  festival of the humanities , just as much as craftsmen, peasants, workers, unemployed, retired, migrants, nomads, etc.

  • The Humanities Festival   can take place anywhere.

  • The humanities festival can preferably take place “ en public ” but also in private (through recordings, audio and video transmissions, etc.).

  • For each of its  occurrences,  the humanities festival  will be eco-responsible, and particularly mindful of its carbon footprint.

  • The festival of humanities  will ensure  nurture local, inter-regional and international cooperation.

  • The festival of humanities claims the right to work miracles with bits of string, as well as the right to public and territorial subsidies, it being understood that any intervention participating in its realization must be remunerated at its fair value.

  • The humanities festival is, in itself, a public order.

  • The humanities festival advocates an open conception of “ culture ” : know-how and popular traditions, health, agriculture, food, ecology, education, trade, lifestyle, etc.

  • The festival of humanities  joins forces with social and environmental organizations that launched the call "  Never again ", adopts the notion of cultural rights, falls within the perspective of the social and solidarity economy, and will take part in the constitution of a citizens' assembly of the future.

  • The humanities festival trusts the living.

“  The obligation to rethink our ways of doing things has been an ongoing embrace for a long time, and of a nature that physical distancing does not suspend.  »
May 29, 2020
#blogmediapart

The advantage of speaking in one's name from intermediate and independent places is that one can express oneself with roughness and put one's foot in the dish without fearing that it will splash. We are people on the sidewalk more than in the living room, we act from spaces, some of which are born of clandestinity, we are those who like to invite fifty people into a garden to meet a musician.

The systems of domination at work in France and all over the world are dangerously predatory, for the commons, for people, and only generate inequalities, competition, injustices, isolation and poverty._cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_

The alternatives and initiatives that hold society together in the midst of a crisis were not born out of the last rain or the last pangolin. The obligation to rethink our ways of doing things has been an ongoing embrace for a long time, and of a nature that physical distancing does not suspend.

Thus, we can see peasants fighting against productivist farmers, cooperatives opposing hierarchical companies, commons resisting market systems, attempts to build sustainable, respectful and innovative models._cc781905-5cde -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

The cultural sector is also crossed by these conflicts, whose stakes are meaningful: cultural democracy, cultural rights, emancipation, relationship between private and public, between large and small, between institution and civil society, between short circuits and retail…

Despite our resistance to these systems, and despite our desire to prioritize meaning, we, actors and authors of the world of art and culture, are not spared by this destructive logic. Some, however, resist against the race for productivity, managerial and technocratic extremism, quantitative evaluations which lead to discredit "small festivals of fifty people".

We are places of life

We, Hybrides, a collective of cultural, intermediary and independent structures in Brittany, are taking action in this fight against the dominant model. We, artists, cultural actors and actresses support the involvement of artists by providing them with the time necessary for their work to have a lasting effect, to place the artistic act at the heart of the city. We are committed, on a daily and long-term basis, to help create the conditions for cultural democracy in action and interact with other social, environmental, economic issues...

From our places, based on the idea of "doing with" — with artistic, cultural, social, political, economic, ecological actors, with a territory and the people who live there — we support contemporary creation and defend the artistic diversity.

We claim the symbolic value of our gestures in small, intimate, confined forms, this proximity, this care, this listening towards our neighbours, anchored in the concrete issues of our territories.

The question is highly cultural

Just as school is not society's nursery, culture is not "its security blanket". Art is not an accessory of consolation but one of the tools, powerful and plural, of seizing the world, one of the vital foods of the systole and the diastole  of our beings and our societies . Of these tools and these vital fluids that make us living humans. Not in survival, not in sub-life, but fully alive.es, and autonomous by this wholeness.

Culture is a right. Artistic reason has its singular necessity. She creates forms where our sensibilities work, where our stories are reflected, where our contradictions are questioned, where our collective experiences are reflected. This is its function, which is neither strictly utilitarian nor pure entertainment. It's multiple cultures, close to the people, we're talking about. Matching the horizontal with the vertical, on a daily basis, fighting against class contempt and ambient narcissism.

Rethinking the essentials

Since the start of this crisis, associations of all stripes, groups of citizens, alternative groups, have been activating the social body to build bridges of solidarity. Are these anonymous people more active than usual? Or does the inactivity of the superfluous reveal what is essential to the life of our society?

Confinement has confirmed to us how essential are:

- the real: touch, caress, smell, look, taste, which cannot be replaced by the virtual;
- the real encounter, including chance encounters, people passing by, improvised meals, shared coffees;
- the sharing of the sensitive: a show, an exhibition does not exist without the presence of bodies, smiles, rumors, words exchanged before and after, shared emotions, shivers, confrontations...
- the collective, thinking together, imagining together, dreaming together… what builds commonality.

Imagine otherwise

Our structures, already under tension for many years, are bearing the brunt of the current crisis.

In our daily lives, we work with artists who are, for many, largely impoverished and threatened with further impoverishment. We build ties with workers with or without jobs, with retirees, families, young people…

We are in contact with social inequalities and want to take the time to think about greater solidarity and contribute to a reflection on tomorrow. It is impossible for us to imagine a return to the same balance as before.

We must get out of the politics of precariousness and survival.
We certainly want the means to do what we have always done, but above all we are calling for a broad reflection on the remuneration of workers, which would not be subject to subordination or the vagaries of the market, which would above all be fair compensation for essential work for emancipation.

We are determined

We refuse to continue to work in a system of one-upmanship where the big ones crush the small ones, where we always water where it is already wet, where the dominant ones speak only to the dominant ones.

We no longer want whole sections of public policy to be sacrificed to the urgency of the moment.
We no longer want cultures to be reduced to the cultural offer.

We no longer want to work in competition.

We want to redefine the terms of expertise.
We do not want to participate in the imperative of growth.

From now on "we get up and we leave!"

We are used to moving forward without certainty. We are used to getting by thanks to the strength of the collective.
We don't want to play the originals let alone shout exception or draw attention to an unconditional rescue of our industry or corporation.
We are and will be in solidarity with the fights of the invisible, the despised, the forgotten, the refused... We are more than ever, and as long as necessary, mobilized in all the movements to share and defend our vision of a united and open world.

It is this same work that we are going to pursue, which is not dictated by the viral threat but by the constantly renewed observation of the indigence and ignominy of a vandal capitalism in essence. This virus is never satisfied.

We are standing, we are responsible, informed, aware, legitimate and well surrounded.es
We invite our members, our audiences, our colleagues, our partners to stand by our side and take care of each other in the meetings that we will be able to invent.

We claim the right to take part in collective reflections, to co-construct with the populations and our communities, ambitious public policies for an essential social transformation.

Now !
